MADISON POLICE DEPARTMENT
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR POLICE OFFICER EMPLOYMENT

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet the following requirements and provide the requested material for their application to be processed.

  1. Be twenty one (21) years of age but not have reached the age of thirty-six (36).
  2. Must be a United States Citizen.
  3. Possess a valid drivers license and provide a copy of such with application.
  4. Include a copy of their Birth Certificate with their application.
  5. Be a High School graduate of have a GED certificate. Include a copy of such with the application along with a copy of any college credits of degree(s).
  6. Shall have no felony conviction or a conviction of Domestic Battery.
  7. Pass a drug screening test.
  8. Successfully pass each phase of the selection process involved in.
  9. Pass a physical and psychological test.
  10. Submit a complete credit history report.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Consists of three (3) eight (8) hour shifts. First shift hours are 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, second shift 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and third shift hours are 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Work schedules are subject to change.

NEED FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION:

New employees will be required to successfully complete a fifteen (15) week training program at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana within one year of employment. Other schools, seminars, training are possible within the first year. Continuing education is required after the first year.

Average Annual Salary:

Starting salary for Probationary Patrolman for 2009 is approximately $36,845.83 plus, other benefits include shift pay, holiday pay, clothing allowance, and medical and dental benefits.

PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST; ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This assessment consist of a series of test to measure an applicant's strength, stamina, and physical ability in performing various Police related activities There will be no grades or points assigned for completion of the individual tests. Each test is either pass or fail and the applicant is required to complete all tests in this phase of the process. Anyone requiring special accommodations should contact the Chief of Police prior to the test.

Every student enrolled in the 15-week law enforcement basic training course on or after January 3, 2000 will have to meet the standard set forth below in order to graduate.

1.5 Mile Run 16 Minutes, 28 Seconds
Vertical Jump 16 inches minimum
Push-ups 25 minimum
Sit-ups 29 minimum
300 Meter Run 71 Seconds

DRY FIRE A WEAPON:

Applicant will be required to dry fire a weapon with both their right and left hand.

NOTE: No applicant's heart rate or blood pressure will be monitored by the provider of this test.
