The Madison Police Department is a full-service police agency, providing police protection to a city of approximately 13,000 residents and a land area of approximately 42 square miles. Madison is a growing and culturally diverse community located on the North Bank of the Ohio River. The Madison Police Department currently employs 27 sworn officers, and 8 civilian employees.

Lieutenant Rick Mundt and K-9 Laykos are currently patrolling the streets of Madison. Laykos came to the Madison Police Department after a fundraising event was held with-in our community. Laykos an Lt. Mundt were trained at Vohne Liche Kennels located in Denver, Indiana, earlier this year. Laykos is a multi-purpose K-9, trained in narcotics detection, tracking, building searches, and criminal apprehension. The Madison Police Department is proud to have Laykos as part of the M.P.D. team.
Special thanks to Alice Carlson Jackson, Ashley Schutte, Valerie Harness, and Millie Harness for their fund raising efforts. Without these outstanding citizens, Laykos would not have been possible.

The Madison Police Department is expanding the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program. On September 28, 2009, Patrol Officer Season Jackson will present the D.A.R.E. program to Fourth Graders. The Fourth Grade program will conclude on December 11, 2009. In the spring of 2010, Lieutenant Dan Thurston will again present the D.A.R.E. program to Sixth Graders. The program was brought back last year after being absent for several years. The Madison Police Department is pleased to present this program to out area students. Educating our youth on thedangers of drugs and the rapport build between the students and officers is of great value to our community.

Lt. Rick Mundt and his K-9 partner Laykos have completed their training at Vohne Liche Kennels located in Denver, Indiana. Laykos has been trained in narcotics detection as well as search and apprehension. Laykos will be a great addition to the fight against drug crimes in our community.
Ptl. Ricky Harris started with the Madison Police Department on February 15, 2009. Ptl. Harris comes to the Madison Police department from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department after serving two years with them. Ptl. Harris has already started working the streets by himself as he has already completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
