December 20, 2011

 

     On December 18, 2011 the Madison Police Department responded to a burglary that had taken place at the Scrub Board Laundry Mat located at 811 W. Main Street.  Ptl. Harris spoke with the owner of the laundry mat who showed him damage to the building and some of the equipment.  The owner showed Officer Harris were the suspect made entry to the building.  It appeared that the suspect removed the electric meter and the phone lines in an attempt not to be detected while committing the burglary.  The Scrub Board Laundry Mat is equipped with several surveillance cameras that were operational during the burglary.  After reviewing the video the suspect was seen casing the laundry mat at 9:39 PM on December 17, 2011.  The suspect’s face was captured on video after he removed his hooded sweatshirt.  The suspect was then seen prying on the door in an attempt to gain entry to the building.  The suspect gained entry into the building and then pried open two change machines and removed the contents.  The suspect caused approximately $5000.00 in damage to the business.

     Ptl. Harris was able to obtain the video from the business and showed Trooper Nate Adams with the Indiana State Police.  Trooper Adams was able to identify the suspect in the video.  Ptl. Harris also showed the video to Det. / Sgt. Eblen and Det. /Sgt. Simpson and they also identified the suspect. 

     On December 19, 2011 Det. / Sgt. Simpson located the suspect Mickle Logsdon in the 1000 block of W. Main Street.  Det. / Sgt. Simpson observed Mickle Logsdon leave the area in a vehicle which Trooper Adams was able to stop on West Street.  Mickle Logsdon was taken into custody at that time and transported to the Jefferson County Jail.  Once at the jail Logsdon was advised of his rights in which he waived.  During the course of the interview Logsdon admitted to breaking into the Scrub Board Laundry Mat.  Logsdon will await his initial hearing on the charges of Burglary Class C Felony and Criminal Mischief Class D Felony.

 On Wednesday, November 30, 2011 The Madison Police Department along with the Madison Police Department Emergency Response Team, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Hanover Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, and the Jefferson County Prosecutors Office executed two search warrants.  One search warrant was executed at the Raq Shaq located at 516 Green Road and the other at a residence located at 106 S. Sycamore Street in Hanover.  The Raq Shaq and the residence are both owned by Keith M. Bilz age 35 of Hanover. 
     The Madison Police Department began an undercover investigation into the sale of illegal narcotics at the Raq Shaq in late September.  Undercover officers made two controlled buys at the Raq Shaq.  After the first purchase the items were sent to the Indiana State Police Lab to be analyzed to identify the substance.  The report identified the substance as a class five controlled substance named Pyrovalerone.  Det. / Sgt. Eblen and Det. / Sgt. Simpson obtained search warrants for both the residence and the business owned by Keith Bilz. 
     During the execution of the search warrant at the Raq Shaq officers seized money and a small amount of the controlled substance Pyrovalerone.  Officers also seized sales receipts related to the business.
     During the execution of the search warrant at Keith Bilz the Emergency Response Team made entry and secured the residence and the people in it.  Once secured officers searched the residence and located over $93,000.00 in cash, over 600 grams of Pyrovalerone and several weapons.  Officers also seized items related to his business.  Keith Bilz was dealing in Pyrovalerone that was packaged in a foil package labeled under the name Radiance.  The packaging states that it is good luck powder and was sold in one gram packages for $53.50 per gram.  The Raq Shaq is owned by Keith Bilz and Tara Johnson.  Keith Bilz was arrested and charged with two counts of Dealing in a controlled substance. Tara Johnson was not arrested due to a medical condition and was transported from Madison Police department to KDHHS for treatment.  Charges of two counts of dealing in a controlled substance will be filed against Tara Johnson in court.  Also arrested was Matt Bennett 26 of Madison for conspiracy to deal in a controlled substance.    Both Bilz and Bennett were transported to the Jefferson County Jail to await their initial hearing.  A total of $95,438.05 was seized from the Raq Shaq and the residence.
     The combined efforts of the Madison Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Hanover Police Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, and Jefferson County Prosecutors Office were able to arrest a major dealer in controlled substances and recover a large amount of drug money in a effort to make our community a safer place to live.

     On Wednesday, November 23, 2011 the Madison Police Department arrested Madison Consolidated Part Time Assistant Band Director Jacob Minton Blanton, age 25, of Scottsburg, Indiana.  Jacob Blanton’s initial charges are Sexual Misconduct with a Minor and 2 counts of Child Seduction.  Additional charges may be filed later.  Jacob Blanton was transported from his residence in Scott County to the Jefferson County Jail to await his initial hearing.

     The Madison Police Department received notification that Jacob Blanton possibly had an inappropriate relationship with a former student.  Det. / Sgt. Simpson made contact with the Madison Consolidated High School administration staff to make them aware of the investigation on Friday, November 18, 2011.  At that time the Madison Consolidated High School Administration placed Jacob Blanton on Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

     Det. / Sgt. Simpson and Det. / Sgt. Eblen interviewed two possible victims of Jacob Blanton.  The first victim was 14 and 15 years of age at the time of the acts were to have taken place.  The other victim was 16 and 17 years of age at the time of the acts at the time the acts were to have taken place.  Both victims gave detailed statements of the events that had taken place.

     The Madison Police Department would like to thank the Madison Consolidated High School Administration Staff for assisting us with this investigation and taking quick action to ensure the safety of the students by placing Jacob Blanton on Administrative Leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  I encourage the parents of any student that has had contact with Jacob Blanton to speak to your children to determine if there was any inappropriate contact between them.  If so contact Det. / Sgt. John Simpson, Det. / Sgt. Ty Eblen, or myself at 265-3347 to file a report.

November 3, 2011

 

     On November 3, 2011 at approximately 7:35 AM the Madison Police Department responded to a burglary in progress at the Raq Shaq located at 516 Green Road.  The caller advised that he was an employee at the store and he had a female at gunpoint that had broken into the store.  Ptl. Wallace. Sr. Ptl. Jackson and Capt. Stephan arrived at the store and could see the front door glass had been broken out.  Officer’s entered the building and took the suspect into custody. 

     The store employee stated that he had been sleeping inside the store overnight due to some recent break-ins at the business.  He advised that he was awakened by the sound of glass shattering.  He stated that he got up and retrieved the weapon and went to the front of the store where he saw the female.  He stated that he told her to get on the ground as he pointed the weapon at her.  He stated that she complied and then he called the police. 

     Sr. Ptl. Jackson transported the suspect, Carrie Mae Williams, age 28, of Madison, Indiana to the Madison Police Department to be interviewed.  At The Madison Police Department Carrie Mae Williams was advised of her rights.  Carrie agreed to speak with officers about what happened.  Carrie Williams first told Det. / Sgt. Eblen and Sr. Ptl. Jackson that she was kidnapped and held at gun point by two males and was forced to break into the store.  After further questioning she admitted that she lied and that she had broken in the store in the attempt to steal money.

     Carrie Mae Williams was transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Jail to await her initial hearing on the charges of Burglary and Criminal Mischief.

October 26, 2011

On October 25, 2011 Det. / Sgt. Simpson and Ptl. Baker were following up on a tip from a concerned citizen about possible cocaine distribution. Officers went to 1737 Marshal Street to speak with the occupants. Officers explained why they were at the residence and asked for consent to search the residence for cocaine. The owner of the residence gave permission to search. Officers located approximately 40 grams of cocaine in a bedroom of the residence. No other illegal items were located inside the residence.

Det. / Sgt. Eblen arrived at the residence and conducted an interview with Ismael S. Martinez who admitted that the cocaine was his. Ismael admitted that he had previously sold cocaine. Ismael was arrested and charged with maintaining a common nuisance and possession of cocaine over 3 grams with the intent to distribute. He was then transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department to await his initial hearing.

     Captain Stephan, Captain Stidham, and Captain Wells selected Det. / Sgt. John Simpson for Officer of the Quarter for the months of July - September.  They cited Det. / Sgt. Simpsons dedication to the job and his continued efforts in the fight against drugs in our community.

     Det. / Sgt. Simpson has been employed with the Madison Police Department since 2004.  He was promoted to the rank of Sr. Patrolman in 2008 and Sergeant in 2009.  He was assigned to the Detective Division in July 2011.

     I would like to congratulate Det. / Sgt. John Simpson for his hard work and dedication to the job.  He is a valuable asset to the Madison Police Department and to the citizens of Madison.

October 13, 2011

 

     On October 12, 2011 the Madison Police Department responded to the First Christian Church located at 512 West Main Street in reference to a Burglary.  Ptl. Adam Guzman spoke with office staff at the church who stated that when they arrived they noticed someone had gained entry to the church and taken several items.  Ptl. Guzman and Lt. Mundt were able to collect evidence at the scene and get a list of items taken along with serial numbers for some of the items.

   Det. / Sgt. John Simpson contacted Ptl. Guzman with information on the possible location of the stolen items.  Dt. / Sgt. Simpson and Ptl. Guzman went to that location and spoke with the people inside the residence.  The homeowner allowed officers inside the residence to speak with them.  While inside the residence officers located in plain sight some of the items taken in the burglary.  Officers then transported Zachary Gray and Brian Ervin to the Madison Police Department to be interviewed.  After Det. / Sgt. Simpson conducted the interviews both men were taken to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department to await their initial hearing on the charges of burglary and theft.

Uses a computer, receives emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical or other emergency services.  Determines the nature and location of the emergency; determines priorities, and dispatches police, fire, or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures.  Receives and processes 911 emergency calls.  Monitor direct emergency alarms, answer non-emergency calls for assistance.  Enters, updates, and retrieves information from a variety of computer systems.  Monitors several complex public safety radio frequencies.  Operate a variety of communications equipment, including radio consoles, telephones and computer systems.  Able to obtain IDACS /NCIC certifications and attend other training as needed to perform the duties of dispatcher.

80 Year Old Man Arrested For Murder

     The Madison Police Department received a 911 call at 6:29 PM on July 12, 2011, in reference to a male who had been shot.  The call came from the 200 block of Crestwood Drive.  Officers from the Madison Police Department, along with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, responded to the scene.  Once there, they were able to take the suspect into custody and KDH EMS was able to render aid to the victim.

     The victim, 57 year old Harry K. Harris, was taken to KDH ER for treatment and was pronounced dead at 7:10 PM.

     Boyd D. Wright Jr., age 80, was taken to KDH ER for treatment of self-inflicted knife wounds.  After his release, he was arrested for Murder and transported to the Jefferson County Jail to await his initial hearing.

     The suspect, Boyd D Wright Jr., stated that the victim was dating his daughter and he did not approve of their relationship.  Boyd D. Wright Jr. stated that when he walked into the room, the victim, Harry K. Harris, was sitting in his chair.  He stated that he then went into his room, got his shotgun, and then shot Harry K. Harris in the back.

     Det.  Sgt. Ty Eblen and Sgt. John Simpson are the lead investigators for the case.  They were assisted by the Indiana State Police Crime Scene Technicians, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Jefferson County Prosecutors Office, KDH EMS, KDH ER staff, and the Jefferson County Coroner’s office.

Methamphetamine lab found on East Street

     Capt. Terry Wells, Sgt. John Simpson, and Ptl. Ricky Harris responded to the 800 block of East Street looking for a wanted man from Florida and discovered an active methamphetamine lab instead.  Officers obtained information that a man wanted from Florida for evading law enforcement was at a residence in the 800 block of East Street.  When officers arrived and spoke to the resident she advised he was not there.  Officers asked if they could walk through the residence with her to see if he was inside.  The resident agreed to walk through with the officers.  While looking for the man officers could detect a chemical odor and located an active methamphetamine lab inside a bedroom closet.  At that time the house was evacuated and the Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab was contacted to respond to the scene to dismantle the lab and collect evidence.

     Christy L. Newman, age 33 of Madison, was arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a park, possession of precursors within 1000 feet of a park and possession of methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a park.  Christy L. Newman also has pending charges for manufacturing methamphetamine in Jennings County.  Christy advised officers that the wanted man had been there but had left out the back of the residence when officers arrived.  Christy was transported to the Jefferson County Jail to await her initial hearing.

Madison Man Arrested for Burglary

     Patrolman Ricky Harris arrested 20 year old Nicholas Tucker of Madison for Burglary 2 counts, possession of stolen property two counts, residential entry, and illegal consumption of alcohol.

     On March 15, 2011 the Madison Police Department responded to two different burglary calls.  One call was in the 2300 block of Flint Street and the other in the 2300 block of Indiana Avenue.  In both cases there were several items of jewelry taken. 

     Patrolman Harris followed up on a possible suspect and interviewed several people regarding the two burglaries.  During some of the interviews Patrolman Harris discovered that some of the jewelry was sold for scrap gold.  Patrolman Harris also recovered several items of jewelry that the two victims later identified some of the items as theirs.  After obtaining this information Patrolman Harris went to speak to Nicholas Tucker at his residence.  Once there Patrolman Harris detected and odor of an alcoholic beverage on him at that time.  Patrolman Harris then arrested Nicholas Tucker for Burglary 2 counts, possession of stolen property two counts, residential entry, and illegal consumption of alcohol.  He was then transported to the Jefferson County Jail to await his initial hearing.

     Patrolman Harris recovered other items of jewelry that have not been claimed.  If anyone else in the area of Flint Street or Indiana Avenue has missing items please contact Patrolman Harris to set up a time to try and identify any of your missing items.

 

April 4, 2011

     On April 3, 2011 Ptl. Ricky Harris and Sgt. Jonathon Simpson responded to 838 East Street to follow up on a tip of a possible methamphetamine lab.  Once at the residence the homeowner was advised of why they were there and was asked for consent to search the sheds behind the residence.  The homeowner consented even at the objection of another party that was at the residence.  Once inside the shed Ptl. Ricky Harris located items consistent with manufacturing methamphetamine.  Ptl. Harris also located items in the trash that were consistent with manufacturing methamphetamine.  After finding these items the Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team was contacted to respond to the scene for proper collection and disposal of evidence.
     Sgt. Simpson conducted an interview with Bernard Etherton who admitted to being the person involved in manufacturing methamphetamine at that location.  Officers determined that the residence was located within 1000 feet of Lorenz Park.  Bernard Etherton was then transported to the Jefferson County Jail on initial charges of Possession of methamphetamine precursors within 1000 feet of a park or school and manufacturing methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a park or school.
     Ptl. Harris and Sgt. Simpson acted on information that was given to them by concerned citizens and were able to take another methamphetamine lab off the streets of Madison.  I encourage anyone with information regarding illegal drugs to contact the Madison Police Department at 265-3347 or the Jefferson County Drug Tip Line at 265-2121.

January 26, 2011
     On January 25, 2011 the Madison Police Department responded to a theft call at Sears located at 419 Clifty Drive.  The caller advised that a male suspect had walked out of the store with a TV that he did not pay for.  They advised that he got into a blue minivan with Texas license plates.  They advised that a female was with the male but she was still inside the store.  Officer Harris responded to Sears to meet with the store employees to get further information. 
     Officer Baker located a blue minivan that matching the description of the one from the theft while patrolling in downtown Madison.  Officer Baker got behind the suspect vehicle and informed other officers.   The suspect vehicle then turned onto Main Street off of Mulberry Street and began weaving in and out of traffic.  AS Officer Baker was catching up to the vehicle the suspect vehicle ran a red light at Main and Broadway.  At that time Patrolman Baker activated his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.  The suspect vehicle failed to stop for Patrolman Baker and sped up.  At that time surrounding agencies were notified that Patrolman Baker was in pursuit west bound on SR 56 towards Hanover.  At the top of Hanover Hill the suspect turned into the Comfort Inn parking lot and then exited out onto SR 62.  The suspect then ran a red light and turned West onto SR 256.    The Hanover Police Department joined the pursuit at SR 265 and SR 62 as well as the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.   The pursuit continued onto SR 256 to HWY 3 where the suspect turned South onto HWY 3.  The Scott County Sheriff’s Department was able to deploy Stop Sticks in Blocher that the suspect’s vehicle struck.  The stop Sticks were successful in deflating the front two tires of the suspect’s vehicle.  The vehicle then slowed down and came to a stop.  The suspect then fled into a wooded area.  After a long extensive search of the area Officer Boldery with the Hanover Police Department and a Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy located the suspect.  The stolen merchandise was located in the suspect vehicle and processed as evidence.
     The suspect identified as Douglas Wright 44, from Scottsburg, IN was then arrested and transported to the Jefferson County Sheriff Department to await his initial court appearance.  He is charged with theft, resisting law enforcement fleeing, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two outstanding warrants from Clark County.
     The combined effort of the Madison Police Department, Hanover Police Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, and the Scott County Sheriff’s Department took another dangerous person off the streets to help continue to make our communities safe.

Mayor Tim Armstrong announces Jeremey Perkins as Assistant Chief of Police

Mayor Tim Armstrong has appointed Jeremey Perkins as Assistant Chief of Police. "Perkins has served the department with dedication since he came on board in 2002. He works well with Chief Denning and we look forward to continuing our tradition of having a quality department," commented Armstrong.

Perkins is a native of Madison and graduated Madison Consolidated High School in the class of 1993. From 1996 to 2002, he worked for Batesville Casket Company for the Interior Department supervising 75 employees as a team leader. Perkins joined the Madison Police Department in 2002 and graduated the Indiana Law Enforcement Acadamey. Perkins had received promotions to Senior Patrolman, Sergeant, and was assigned as a Detective in 2008. He is married to Kim Duncan and has two sons.

Perkins said, "I am honored to be chosen for this position having been selected among all the other highly qualified candidates. The department has come a long way under recent years and I look forward to continuing that path with Chief Denning."

Denning formally announced as Madison Police Chief
Mayor Tim Armstrong formally announced the appointment of Maj. Yancy Denning as Madison police chief this morning. Armstrong had said at a recent City Council meeting that Denning would be the new chief.

"He will be a good fit in the city's administration in that we have worked together for many years and have shared many stories," Armstrong, a former police officer, said in a press release.

Denning graduated from Madison Consolidated High School in 1992 and earned an associate degree in science/law enforcement. He worked for the security department at Hanover College and also served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Reserve Department. He became a police officer in 1998 and received promotions to senior patrolman, sergeant and assistant chief.

Denning, who was promoted to assistant chief in 2008, was named interim chief several months ago when former Chief John Wallace stepped down after a Hatch Act complaint was filed during his successful campaign for sheriff.

"I never thought I would become chief because my intention was just to be a police officer being out on the streets working with and helping people," the press release quoted Denning saying.

"I want to work more with the community through safety programs, especially hand-gun education and continuing the walking and biking police program," he said. "The presence of police officers on the downtown streets has helped to curb some of the vandalism and fighting."

     On December 20, 2010 the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Excise Police, and the Madison Police Department conducted and investigation that led to the arrest of three people.  Arrested were Jeffery Tatlock, age 28 for a warrant out of Scott County, dealing methamphetamine, and conspiracy to deal in methamphetamine; William Neyer, age 24 visiting a common nuisance, and Christina Dean, age 24 maintaining a common nuisance, and conspiracy to deal methamphetamine.

     Officers from the Indiana State Police and Indiana State Excise Police were conducting surveillance of a residence located in the 800 block of West Main Street.  Officers were looking for Jeffery Tatlock who was wanted out of Scott County for failure to appear for possession of cocaine and possession of ephedrine.  Officers witnessed Tatlock exit the residence and get into a vehicle and travel west on Main Street.  Sgt. Jonathon Simpson located the vehicle and witnessed Tatlock inside the vehicle.  Sgt. Simpson then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle.  Sgt. Simpson placed Tatlock under arrest for the warrant out of Scott County.  During the traffic stop Sgt. Simpson found methamphetamine and other items used in dealing methamphetamine.  Tatlock was transported to the Jefferson County Jail.

     Officer went back to the residence on West Main Street and spoke with the occupants.  Once inside the residence the occupant gave consent to search the residence.  Officers could detect a strong odor of a chemical smell and located a methamphetamine lab inside the residence.  Officers evacuated the residence until the Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab could arrive to dismantle the lab.  Based on what officers had witnessed and were told at the scene Dean and Neyer were transported to the Jefferson County Jail on charges of maintaining a common nuisance and visiting a common nuisance. 

     Sgt. Simpson then obtained a search warrant for the residence.  Once the Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab team arrived the search warrant was executed.  During the search several chemicals and ingredients used in manufacturing methamphetamine were located in the residence.  Officers also located methamphetamine in the residence as well as items used to ingest methamphetamine.

     During the search of the residence Christine Dean arrived back to the residence after posting a cash bond for her initial charge of maintaining a common nuisance.  Christine was read her rights and agreed to waive them and be interviewed by Sgt. Simpson.  After locating items in the residence and the interview of Christine Dean she was then arrested on an additional charge of conspiracy to deal methamphetamine.  She was then transported to the Jefferson County Jail.

     This joint investigation by the Indiana State Police, Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab, Indiana State Excise Police and the Madison Police Department led to the arrest of three people and took more drugs off the streets of Madison.  I encourage anyone with information on the illegal use or distribution of narcotics in Madison or Jefferson County to contact the Madison Police Department at 265-3347 or the Jefferson County Task Force Tip Line at 265-2121.

 

November 11, 2010

     On November 6, 2010 the Madison Police Department was contacted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department requesting that we investigate a robbery complaint in the 6000 block of W SR 256.  They requested we take the report due to a conflict of interest in the case.

     Ptl. Ricky Harris of the Madison Police Department responded and took the robbery complaint.  The victim stated that he was at his residence with Ashley Jansen when three men wearing hooded sweatshirts and bandanas over their faces came into his hose and attacked him.  He stated that they took his wallet and his cell phone.  The victim stated that the men kicked him, punched him, and chocked him causing injuries to him.  The suspects then fled the residence along with Ashley Jansen. 

     After collecting evidence at the crime scene Officer Harris located Ashley Jansen and interviewed her about the incident.  After a lengthy interview Ashley Jansen, age 19, was arrested for aiding in burglary and aiding in robbery.

     Officers then tracked down Sabrina Mahoney and interviewed her about any possible involvement.  After being interviewed Sabrina Mahoney, age 21, was arrested for aiding in robbery and aiding in theft.

     Currently wanted in connection with the robbery are Christopher M. McManus, age 21, Stephen M. McManus, age 19, and Shawn D. Thomas, age 20.  These men are considered dangerous but it is unknown if they are armed with any weapons.

     Officers searched a wooded area on 11/10/2010 in Milton Kentucky for two of the suspects where they had been camping.  If anyone sees these men please contact your local law enforcement agency.  If anyone is helping these men avoid arrest they could also face charges. 

     Officer Ricky Harris and Det. Sgt. Tyson Eblen led the investigation and were assisted by the Indiana State Police and the Trimble County Sheriff’s Department.

     On September 30, 2010 Officers from the Madison Police Department served a search warrant at 3324 N. Crum Road for items related to the evidence of possession and or manufacturing of methamphetamine. 

     Upon serving the search warrant officers came into contact with Anthony W. Taylor Sr., Tammy S. Taylor, Anthony W. Taylor Jr., Samantha L. Taylor, David A. Garcia, and elderly male.  After securing suspects KDH EMS was called to the scene to transport the elderly male to KDH.

     During the search of the residence and vehicles officers located methamphetamine, marijuana, precursors for manufacturing methamphetamine, and other items used in manufacturing methamphetamine.  Officers on scene contacted the Indiana State Police Clandestine Team to properly collect the items relating to the methamphetamine lab.

     One male juvenile also lived at the residence but was not there at the time of the search.  He was removed from the home and placed into foster care by the Division of Family and Children.

     Arrested at the scene were Samantha L. Taylor, age 21, for possession of marijuana, manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and failure to report neglect; Tammy S. Taylor, age 45, for possession of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and neglect of a dependent; Anthony W. Taylor Sr., age 41, for possession of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and neglect of a dependent; David Garcia, age 28, possession of marijuana, manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and failure to report neglect; Anthony W. Taylor Jr., age 18, possession of methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, and failure to report neglect.

     While officers were on scene with the Indiana State Police Clandestine Team a vehicle that was known to visit the residence drove by.  Officers that had been doing surveillance at the residence had advised officers during a briefing that the vehicle would possibly be at the residence when they served the search warrant.  Officers then went in the direction that the vehicle had last been scene.  Officers located the vehicle stopped in the road.  Officers could see one male walking to the wooded area carrying some items.  Officers approached the male as he came back to his vehicle.  Officers secured the three people that were in the vehicle until the Indiana State Police Clandestine Team arrived to locate the items.  Items located were precursors used in manufacturing methamphetamine. 

     Carl R. Keller, age 28, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to deliver, Shannon R. Snelling, age 28, possession of precursors, and Richard W. Brown, age 48, possession of precursors.

     The investigation was led by Sgt. Jonathon Simpson, Det. Sgt. Tyson Eblen, and Det. Sgt. Jeremey Perkins.  The Madison Police Department was assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, and the Indiana State Police Clandestine Team.

 

September 28, 2010

 

     On September 28, 2010 at approximately 4:21 AM, Officers from the Madison Police Department responded to an alarm at Needful Things located at 901 E. First Street.  Officers arrived and found the east entrance door open.  Officers searched the building and did not locate anyone inside.  A key holder was contacted and they advised that it appeared as if nothing was taken. 

     Sr. Patrolman Ben McKay and Ptl. Seth Melton believed that the person or persons involved might come back to gain entry into the building again.  Sr. Ptl. Ben McKay positioned himself at a vacant residence where he could keep visual surveillance of the east entrance.  Sr. Patrolman McKay witnessed two subjects approach the building one wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and one wearing a red hooded sweatshirt.  Sr. Patrolman McKay started toward the building when he hard the alarm go off.  As he approached the entrance to Needful Things a male subject wearing a red hooded sweatshirt exited the building.  Sr. Patrolman McKay identified himself and gave verbal commands to the suspect.  The male later identified as Ethan J. Sizemore, then fled on foot.  Sr. Patrolman McKay apprehended him behind Mayflower on Park Ave.

     Officers searched the building for the other suspect but, they had fled before the officers arrived back to the building.  A key holder was contacted to come back to the scene.  Once there the key holder advised that she did not notice anything missing at this time.

     Ethan J. Sizemore, age 20, was arrested for burglary and resisting law enforcement by fleeing.  He was transported to the Jefferson County Jail to await his initial court appearance.

 

September 22, 2010

On the early morning hours of September 22, 2010, the Madison Police Department, along with the Indiana State Police Drug Investigative Division, served two search warrants in Woodside Mobile Village just outside the city limits. Arrested were Salvador S. Castro, age 23, for Dealing in Cocaine and also on a warrant for failure to appear in court; Melquiades Canch, age 35, for visiting a common nuisance; Shelly A. Westerman, age 28, for maintaining a common nuisance; Nicholas S. Castro, age 26, for conspiracy to deal cocaine; Moria May Grigsby, age 24, for dealing in cocaine; and Oscar Alexixs Delzeath, age 21, for visiting a common nuisance.

The search warrants were executed at 757 Ann Trace and 3392 River Birch Dr. located in Woodside Mobile Village. Officers seized narcotics, U.S. currency, and other items involved in the drug trade. Det. Sgt Tyson Eblen, Det. Sgt. Jeremey Perkins, Sgt. John Simpson, and Det. Capt. John Wallace led the investigation along with the help of the Indiana State Police Drug Investigative Division.

After Officers fromt he Madison Police Department and Indiana State Police has secured the scene and placed the suspects under arrest, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department was contacted to assist in transporting the arrested to the Jefferson County Jail.

It is with the combined effort of the Indiana State Police and the Madison Police Department that we were able to take a big supplier of narcotics off the streets of Jefferson County. September 9, 2010

The Madison Police Department seized approximately 160 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $160,000.00. Det. Sgt. Jeremey Perkins and Det. Sgt. Tyson Eblen were contact by a concerned citizen who had locaed a few marijuana plants in a cornfield. The responded to the area and located 16 marijuana plants in the cornfield. They then contacted the Indiana State Marijuana Eradication Team and requested them to fly over the are to locate any other marijuana plants. The Indiana State Police Mariajuana Eradication Team located several more areas in the cornfield that contained marijuana plants. Det. Sgt. Jeremey Perkins and Det. Sgt. Tyson Eblen went back to the area and located additional marijuana plants. Thanks to the cooperation of a concerned citizend the Madison Police Department was able to take a large quantity of drugs off the streets of Madison.
