Internship Program
The City of Madison offers 12-week long, paid internships for college students and young professionals. Internships provide an opportunity to gain practical knowledge of municipal government through active participation in the everyday workings of the city. Responsibilities and scheduling vary depending on departments. Schedules will not exceed 20 hours a week.
Application Deadline
- Summer internship applications are due no later than May 16, 2025.
Eligibility
- Undergraduate students and recent college graduates (young professionals) are eligible to apply. High school students looking to fulfill class requirements will be considered for unpaid opportunities.
Benefits
- Internships are paid $12 per hour, working a maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Schedules are flexible and depend on department needs.

2025 Summer Opportunities
Athletic & Aquatic Program Management Intern
The Athletic & Aquatic Program Management Intern works directly with the Madison Parks and Recreation Athletic Director to coordinate and execute various aspects of athletic and aquatic programs offered within the community. The intern will collaborate with department staff and community partners to promote programs, engage participants, and enhance Madison Parks and Recreation's overall quality and reach.
Responsibilities:

- Assist with seasonal league management.
- Provide support at practices, games, and aquatic events.
- Assist with concessions support as needed.
- Work with the communication department to connect with the community about upcoming events, leagues, and programs.
- Support aquatic operations, including assisting with scheduling, safety protocols, and event coordination.
- Assist with various other tasks in the department.
Requirements:

- Must be able to step in to umpire, score keep, and provide basic aquatic event support as needed.
- Strong communication skills.
- Experience or a strong interest in photography is a plus.
- Interest or background in aquatic management, lifeguarding, or pool operations is a plus.
This is an active position in the field! Weekends will be required.
Community Development and Events Intern
The Community Development and Events Intern works directly with the Madison Parks and Recreation Community Develop Director to coordinate and execute various aspects of the programs for our active adult community and our large-scale, free community events such as parades, movies in the park, and more. The intern will work closely with department staff to support various community-building initiatives, fostering participant engagement and connection.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in organizing and executing community events to ensure a positive and engaging experience for participants.
- Help develop and manage programs that cater to the needs and interests of community members.
- Support daily operations at the Senior Center and community development activities, including event logistics.
- Work with the communications department to promote activities and events across the community.
Requirements:
- A passion for community development and working with active adult populations.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- A proactive, team-oriented attitude.
Occasional evenings and weekends will be required.
