City of Madison Receives a 2023 Tree City USA Designation

Madison, Indiana (April 2, 2024) The City of Madison is proud to announce its designation as a 2023 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. This recognition highlights Madison's commitment to effective urban forest management.

Tree City USA is a nationwide movement sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. To achieve this recognition, a city must meet four program requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and observing Arbor Day.

"A Tree City USA recognition for 2023 highlights our ongoing commitment to preserving and expanding our urban forest, which plays a crucial role in enhancing our quality of life and beautifying our community," said Madison Mayor Bob Courtney. "I am thankful to the city tree expert Tim Perry and the volunteers who serve on our tree board, Glen Schulte, Tom Stark, Karen Skillman, Melinda Acree, and Jeff Matheney for their efforts to promote tree planting, maintenance and education."

With nearly 200 trees planted in 2023, the City of Madison joins a network of more than 3,400 communities across the country dedicated to ensuring that their urban forests thrive.

To celebrate this achievement and further promote the importance of trees, the City of Madison Tree Board will host an Arbor Day event on May 4, 2024, at the Madison Farmers Market from 9-11 AM. During the event, the tree board will be giving away pecan, swamp white oak, cherry bark oak and bald cypress tree saplings.
